PSHE Curriculum Intent

Our Intent
At SS Peter and Paul Catholic Primary School, the Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE) curriculum programme of study brings together citizenship with personal well-being, while promoting a British values-based education. It is intended to support the school in developing a cohesive whole-school approach to personal, social, health and economic well-being. Our PSHE curriculum reflects our priority to support the development of the ‘whole child’, by helping them to understand how they are developing personally and socially as well as promoting their social, mental and physical development. Children will be able to develop the ability to tackle the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.
Our Implementation
In our school, we choose to deliver Personal, Social, Health Education using Jigsaw, the mindful approach to PSHE. Pupils learn to understand and respect our common humanity; diversity and differences so that they can go on to form the effective, fulfilling relationships that are an essential part of life and learning. Jigsaw PSHE will support the development of the skills, attitudes, values and behaviour, which enable pupils to:
- Have a sense of purpose;
- Value self and others;
- Form healthy relationships;
- Make and act on informed decisions;
- Communicate effectively;
- Work with others;
- Respond to challenge;
- Be an active partner in their own learning;
- Be active citizens within the local community;
- Explore current affairs and issues relating to living in a democratic society;
- Become healthy and fulfilled individuals.
In addition to weekly discreet lessons, PSHE is embedded in all that we do via a cross-curricular approach, to enable our children to become independent, responsible, healthy and confident members of society. Children are taught how to keep themselves safe, physically and emotionally resulting in the acquisition of knowledge and skills, which enables children to access and enjoy the wider curriculum.
We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.
The curriculum provides a context for our school to fulfil our responsibilities to:
- Promote the physical, social and emotional well-being of pupils.
- Provide sex and relationships education (RSE).
- Promote British values.
- Provide a safe place for discussion of current, relevant social issues.
- Protect our children from exploitation and radicalisation.
Alongside the ‘Jigsaw PSHE’ scheme of work, Relationship Education is taught in the summer term following guidance from the Catholic Southwark Diocese, covering many aspects of the Science curriculum and teaching pupils about safe and positive relationships whilst managing changes in their bodies as they grow.
